Tips to Prevent Mold Growth in Your Basement

Mold needs two things in order to thrive: a moisture source and a food source. A food source for mold is any cellulose-based substrate and most of these substrates can be found in the average basement. Common food sources for mold include drywall, wood, fabric, and more. Since there is virtually no way of eliminating every possible food source for mold, the key in maintaining normal, healthy conditions in your basement is monitoring for moisture. A moisture source can be something obvious such as a flood or leak; it can also be something not so obvious, such as high relative humidity levels.

Here are some preventative measures that you can take to help eliminate moisture sources and, in turn, prevent mold in your basement:

  • Run the appropriate size dehumidifier in your basement to keep the relative humidity below 50-55%
  • Insure that gutters are not clogged and they are functioning properly
  • Extend downspouts to promote water flow away from the foundation of your home
  • Correct any negative grading along the perimeter of your home
  • Do not plant trees or shrubbery too close to your foundation, as they will attract water

Remember that just correcting the moisture source will not take care of any pre-existing mold issues. If you think your may have a mold issue in your basement, contact us to speak to a professional or to schedule a mold inspection. PA: 215-804-1077 or NJ: 609-457- 1134
